XPO Co-op Pilot - "Wireless Buddy Box" Applications

This product is designed to introduce a whole new concept in flight training for both novice and skilled pilots and flight competitions alike.  The flexibility and features of this product allow for the seamless integration of two different remote control systems into the same vehicle while eliminating the restrictions of having both pilots stand side by side.

The master transmitter/receiver and secondary transmitter/receiver can be any brand using any transmission technology (Spektrum, FASST, PCM, PPM, FM, AM, etc).  For example, the master Tx/Rx system can be JR and the secondary Tx/Rx system can be Futaba (or any other brand system for either master or secondary pilots).

Since the servo control switching occurs onboard the aircraft, the pilots are free to stand anywhere.  For flight instruction, the beginner pilot enjoys the freedom of standing alone and sensation of solo flight in every flight.  Likewise, the flight instructor does not have to worry about being attached to the student…

The Co-op Piloting System (XPO) can also be used for advanced training where high dollar models are involved.  The advanced student, for example, can learn aerobatics, 3D, fly jets or helis one channel at a time while instructor manages the rest of the flight controls jointly!  Therefore, maneuvers like torque rolls are less intimidating to learn! Please view the Product Manual in PDF for more information and also the rest of this webpage.

Co-op Competition and Co-op Flight Training

Flight competitions like Pylon Racing can now enjoy the benefit of two pilots instead of one.  This means that the flight track can be twice the normal size where one portion of the Pylon Markers are easily viewed by one pilot while the second half of the track is easily monitored by the other pilot.  Furthermore, other R/C vehicles like cars and boats may also use the device to increase piloting surface coverage (i.e., two drivers at different portions of a car track or two boat racers on either side of stream/pond).

Other uses can be in aerobatic competitions where the switching between pilots is controlled by a third (judges table) Tx/Rx pair (the ultimate challenge)….  For example, a DUAL.  Pilots show up with their TX's and RX's, a mystery airplane is unveiled at the competition.  Once in the air,  Pilot "A" calls out the maneuver, control is given to pilot 'B" who has to replicate the same.  (...Iron Chef meets Billiards Trick Shot...)

Also, the system can be used to allow 2 pilots, 3 pilots and 4 pilots to the same aircraft.   (See "More XPO Features Compared to Conventional Buddy" Section below.)

Unprecedented, Co-op Competitions and Co-op Flight-Training are now possible.

XPO Co-op Piloting Features

In-flight Redundancy:

   * If secondary pilot suffers interference while in control, the master pilot can simply take control back of the aircraft.
   * If secondary pilot Tx battery shuts down while in control, the master pilot can simply take control back of the aircraft.
   * If master pilot Tx battery shuts off while secondary pilot is flying, the aircraft simply remains in full control of the secondary pilot (provided master pilot is using PCM or better technology).
   * If master pilot suffers from interference while in control, simply program the fail safe to switch control to the secondary pilot!

Ground Flexibility:

   * Any Tx/Rx pair can be used together regardless of Brand Name and transmission technology (2.4GHz or 72MHz or 50 MHz and so on). If using AM/FM/PCM Tx/Rx pairs, the frequency of the master and secondary devices must be different.  Thus, giving more interference redundancy to the aircraft.
   * Pilots are free to stand anywhere.
   * Depending on user wiring, master pilot can give full aircraft control to secondary pilot or partial control where some channels remain with the master control at all times.
   * Flight Control Switching can be done by any toggle or dial in the Master Tx.  (No more holding the “trainer toggle” depressed to allow access to the student.)  Simply choose the dedicated channel in the master Tx/Rx and use the corresponding toggle/dial to allow/deny control access to the secondary pilot.
   * Trim Potentiometer increases/decreases control switch sensitivity.

Powering Features:

   * Rx battery is connected directly to the switch board, thus, the channel “8/B” on receiver is available for use as a valid servo port.  i.e. A dedicated battery port on the control board is available so a valid servo port on the Rx is not taken up by the battery.
   * Low Battery - when onboard battery reaches ~4V, the master pilot can no longer switch control to the secondary pilot.  This indicates to the master pilot that it is time to land and switch in a new battery into the aircraft!
   * Additional batteries can be connected to any available port on either receivers or switch board.  Thus, the additional battery adds available capacity to the entire system.  (In multi-battery setup, batteries are in parallel and must have the same chemistry, voltage, amperage and make/model.)
   * LED in unit lights up when control is switched to secondary pilot.

Vehicle and TX Type Flexibility:

   * The on board switching unit works for either electric or gas/glow type vehicles.  It can be used in any RC hobby (cars, boats, helis and aircraft) and any TX Mode (1 - 2).

Channels Available for Switching:

   * There are 4 boards available.  The PO can switch 3 channels.  The XPO can switch 6 channels.  The XO can switch 9 channels.  The CO can switch 12 channels.  The PO, XO and CO are coming soon for sale under our company website...

More XPO Features compared to Conventional Buddy Box

Aside from all of the features above, the Wireless Buddy Box Device offers the following advantages over the Cable Buddy Box.

   * No need to strain your finger holding a "trainer toggle".

   * With the cable buddy box all the features of the master controller are bypassed when trainee is flying. The conventional buddy box does not have dual rates, end points, expo, etc. etc. etc. With this system, all the features of both transmitters are available AND completely tunable to each pilot's preferences.

While some students take to learning quickly, others take much longer to get the "feel" of the model. For those pilots, the problem is inevitably over controlling the sticks. With this system you can dial the rates way, way down and slowly increase the rates as the student progresses. And even though the rates are set extremely low on the student's transmitter, the instructor retains full Tx capability and authority over the model.

Additionally, the student is using the very transmitter during training that will be used for solo flight. Since nothing changes, the student will be completely comfortable with the feel of the sticks for that all important first solo flight. No surprises!

   * The XPO can give full or partial flight access to secondary pilot.  Learn to flight helis one channel at a time (just like real pilots).  OR, learn 3D one channel at a time by sharing piloting with a experienced pilot.  Learn how to "hang" on the prop elevator and aileron first.  Then, learn the "tricky" rudder alone.  Later, learn 3D with all channels at once...

   * The XPO can switch 6 channels.  In comparison, the buddy box cable limits control access to only channels 1 through 4.  Coming soon, other models of the wireless buddy box can switch 3 channels (for boats and cars), 9 channels and 12 channels!  Compatible with Mode 1 and 2, TX modes do not have to be the same.

   * Since the transmitters are not connected, pilots will not damage their transmitters. Typically, the jack used for the cable systems malfunctions after continuous use...

   * High end transmitters not always have the cable buddy box jack.  Therefore, these transmitters can not be used for training with the conventional cable.  The Wireless Buddy Box includes these high end transmitters for use in flight training or Co-op Competition.

   * Co-op Flight training is now possible as well.  You can use both the XPO and the Cable(s) together.  For example, the instructor can take out 2 students at a time.  One student uses the conventional cable while the other uses the XPO to access flight controls!!!!!!  In this case a total of 3 pilots are flying (one instructor/master and 2 students).

You can also have a total of four pilots to one airplane (2 instructors and 2 students).  The receivers connected to the XPO belong to the instructors and both Tx's on the ground can have the regular buddy box cable connected, thus, allowing for 2 more pilots to join.
Of course, the master receiver can take away flight access from all 3 pilots at any time.

Professional Applications and Multi-Piloting

Multiple XPO's can be daisy chained so the vehicle can have any number of pilots.  By using transmitters with a fail-safe set to give control to the next pilot, the vehicle can have multiple pilots.  Once the current pilot turns off his transmitter, the switch will pass piloting to the next receiver on down the chain.

   * Film industry can use this to perform flight footage and follow the action over a much bigger region by having multiple pilots scattered throughout while hidden from camera view.  Perfect for aerial photography using helis, co-op piloting, master pilot hovers while secondary cameraman-pilot uses tail rotor to pan heli and take snap shot!  Master pilot can take back tail rotor control and fly to the next are of interest.
   * Land surveying can be covered over a wide range by having multiple pilots to the same vehicle, all sharing control of the vehicle in sequence.
   * Pipeline Inspections using ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles).  Two drivers on either end of the pipe can share control of ROV to cover more pipeline and diagnose a longer pipe section.  Applicable on land, ship and off shore rigs and more!

UAV Application (Military, Civilian & Academic)

Test your custom artificial pilot without worries of crashing. Grant servo control to your artificial pilot whenever you wish and take control back whenever as well. If you run both human and artificial inputs into the in-flight computer you run the risk of crashing if the computer freezes up or powers down.

Your entire vehicle can go down in a single point of failure!!!!!!! I have flown UAVs and have had a few go down that way. This is why I developed this product! Don't tackle safety protocols and flight testing together in one sitting! Use the XPO to test your artificial pilot without worrying about how to handle safety issues due to loss of communication to your on board computer or bugs in your software/program!!!!!!  Simply use the secondary pilot bus on the XPO as your artificial pilot rather than a second human pilot.

Military
*  Use the XPO to share control of your (air or land-based) vehicle.
*  Use the XPO to share control of your vehicle between the "trailer" station and the outside pilot.  Eliminate your 30 foot cable connecting your outdoor pilot from you trailer (indoor) pilot.  Also, have the flexibility of using other radio systems - do not be stuck using the same radio brand/technology wether during testing or in the field.
*  Use the XPO to share control of the vehicle between your take-off/land pilot and the downrange (backup/mobile) pilot.  Don't let your asset fly away on you, especially during testing.  Moreover,  have more than one mobile pilot on the ground following the airborne vehicle (within visual) ready to be given control of vehicle at first sign of computer glitch...
*  Share other servo-based subsystem controls like: onboard cameras pan/tilt, target acquisition, etc.
*  Share flight controls of one vehicle with two strategically placed pilots (hilltop/ building top) in the filed.       ...many more....
